International Mass Media; Al-Jazeera comes up top

Sitting at home in Central Kenya, good and unbiased international news is hard to come by, this primarily  stems from a lack of financial resources to invest in pay television. We go around this handicap though by try to take advantage of free-view satellite television from various regions of the world.

From our 180 cms parabolic satelte dish mounted outside our house we are able to access the following international channels; Al-Jazeera-English 24HRs, Russia Today (Russia) 24hrs, Press TV 24HRs (Iran), (Sky News (UK), CNN, BBC) all through assorted second party Tanzanian television stations.

With the assortment above sifting what is news whats genereally bloated becomes a problem. For starters Press TV is a dedicated 24HR anti Zionist/American television  probably an outward extension of the Ahmedinajad/Ayatolah ideology, that the studios are in the United Kingdom is not the matter. On the coverage of the Middle-East crisis for example, Al-Jazeera calls it the Arab awakening Press TV calls it Islamic awakening. The superficial observer though can tell that the revolutions in the middle east have nothing to do with religion but rather relgious sanctioned despotism.

On its part Russia Today has an outdated cold war propaganda agenda, that it has very informative documentaries for instance a recent one on Trans-genic technology is something even i have to acquiesce. It loses its legitimacy as an unbiased news source because of the perceived moral high it portends to protect against alleged American free market disasters.

Sky news on its part, is not an international news channel, just a UK station with global reach.  BBC is a pretty decent but old fashioned. CNN is a useful compromise, though it has its share of extremely good features, back story and market place Africa being part of those. Of course in between this news channels is CCTV International a Chinese channel that mainly aims at breaching Western Hegemony in the international news set-up by systemized Sino/Mandarin culture education, this though makes it quite borinng

Al-Jazeera though takes the first prize. Its courage and delivery of news in unbridled form is laudable. Its documentaries mind racking, Witness and Fault-lines being among my favorite.  The news is cinematic with reporters taking the television viewer first row action. Kudos Al-Jazeera.

*ABC news now (America), disappears from this analysis because it has since dissapeared from free-view satelite.

In Kenya, K24 takes the honours.
